BOSTON, MA — August 16, 2021 — Haitian Americans United, Inc. (“H.A.U.”), the Association of Haitian Women in Boston (“AFAB”) and other partner organizations join the Haitian community in solidarity following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that shook Haiti on Saturday, August 14, 2021 around 8:35 AM. Near 1,300 have lost their lives and over 1,800 are left injured according to the latest reports.

“We are deeply saddened by this disaster. Once again, we are at this crucial juncture where all Haitian-American organizations, their partners, from the private and the public sector need to join in coordinating these efforts to benefit the victims”, said Rev. Dieufort Fleurissaint, H.A.U. Chair.

“This is a community effort - we are putting our heads together to help our nation in serious need at this time. We welcome non-Haitians to partake in this effort,” said Carline Desiré, Executive Director at the Association of Haitian Women in Boston (AFAB).

In response to this devastating disaster, an emergency task force, the “2021 Mass. Haitian Relief Task Force”, has been created. The first meeting of the task force is scheduled for Monday, August 16th at 6:00 PM to announce a multi-phased community response:

  • Phase 1: provide immediate financial assistance to grassroots entities in affected areas.

  • Starts immediately - beginning with prompt assessment of needs;

  • Phase 2: assess the need for collection drives for urgent medical supplies and equipment and report to the public in the very near future.
